I just returned from the Brooklyn Museum, where El Anatsui gave an artist talk. He is a Ghanaian painter and sculptor, whose main medium is ... bottle caps. The installations El makes must be experienced in person! You might just find yourselves as overwhelemed as I was by their beauty and meaning. Here's a quick iPhone portrait of the artist I did from the mezzanine during his talk. He seems to constantly wear a smile, which I noticed only from up close, during the book signing. Virtual Flowers Blooming at the Bronx Botanical Garden NY

June is known as the Rose month at the Bronx Botanical Garden in NYC. But what's in season in July? Virtual flowers! I planted a few there, in augmented reality. They are animated drawings, visible through a free augmented reality browser Layar for smart phones. My layer is called "Julia Sverchuk". Drawing Music Goes On Augmented Reality Tour!

The virtual tour of Drawing Music has officially began! Right now, musicians are performing between W16th and W19th streets on The High Line in NYC.

MoMA Eindhoven :: Augmented Reality Gallery

I now exhibit my drawings in MoMA Eindhoven, Netherlands, in an augmented reality gallery as part of the DIY museum by Sander Veenhof. You can participate too, by uploading your artworks here >

Sander Veenhof pioneered the idea of infiltrating physical museum spaces with augmented reality exhibitions in New York back in 2010, proving there are no more boundaries. He and Mark Skwarek had an "Uninvited" augmented reality art opening at MoMA NYC. I wrote about this incredible event here >

As an artist who practices the oldest of art forms - drawing from life - I am captivated by the newest of art forms - augmented reality, wondering how the two will effect each other. Changing the way artists can exhibit art and what "exhibiting" actually means in augmented reality is just the beginning.

Mass at the Russian Orthodox Church in New York

I had an opportunity today to witness the Vigil on the eve of St. Nicholas feast
at the Russian Orthodox Church in New York. It was really beautiful...I quietly drew on my iPhone in the corner.

Waiting For The Curtains To Part...

...before the [sold out] Amon Tobin's ISAM live projection mapping show at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple on October 25. The show took my breath away. Along with the breath, the hearing and sight were also temporarily gone, as it was a complete sensory overload. If interested, check out the trailer here

Drawing Music :: Ecstatic Music Festival : Judd Greenstein & Olga Bell

Another beautiful Ecstatic Music Festival event!  This time, it was the festival's curator himself who was on stage. Judd Greenstein, an immensely talented New York-born-and-raised composer, presented 4 movements from Sh'lomo. The work tells the story of King Solomon and the Jewish people. Judd Greenstein brings his heritage and the wisdom of ancestors to modern life through shimmering voices of singers and his pulsating music. Truly ecstatic. 

I left humming the last musical phrase from Sh'lomo.  Turned out, I was not the only one...

Judd Greenstein shared the stage with Olga Bell, a Moscow-born/Alaskan-raised/New York-based musician and composer. Olga presented an ambitious piece in 7 movements that told the story of Russia's frontier lands. It is titled Krai and is sung in Russian. Similar to Judd Greenstein, Olga draws on her heritage, folk fables and even an ancient Orthodox prayer.
