Drawing Music :: In A Gallery

Selected 9 pieces from the "Drawing Music" series are currently on display at the ICO Gallery as part of the group show "Reflecting on History OR What Became of My Red Star". Olga Monastyrskaya, the curator, did a fantastic job of brining 15 Russian-born artists together in this show. There must have been well over 500 people on our opening night!

Drawing Music :: Fedorov+Volkov+Medeski+Ribot+Smith.

This was not just another concert. A riveting, overwhelming flood of energy filled (Le) Poisson Rouge last week, when 5 of my favorite musicians took the stage. The unusual thing about this performance was in the fact that 2 of the 5 musicians were Russian, and the other 3 - American. I have admired them separately for years, went to concerts and sang along to lyrics I knew by heart.  And then..somehow, somewhere in the universe, they found out about each other. They met. They clicked. They recorded an album and went on stage to perform together. It was unbelievable. The language barrier was irrelevant - only pure musical symbiosis. They were meant to be and they knew it, and the excitement flowed from stage into the audience and back. I don't remember when was the last time I experienced such powerful, emotional, beautiful immersion. The name of the collaborative album is RAZINRIMILEV, and the participating musicians are Leonid Fedorov (vocals, guitar), Vladimir Volkov (upright bass), John Medeski (piano), Marc Ribot (guitar), and Ches Smith (drums).

Mystic Outdoor Art Festival 2010

I am very honored to have my stamp design commissioned by The Museum of America and The Sea at Mystic Seaport for the upcoming Mystic Outdoor Art Festival. Can't wait to see how this looks on brochure covers and tees. Thank you, Mystic, and Thank you, Dalvero Academy, for this amazing opportunity!

August of 2010 marks the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and Mystic Seaport commemorates the tragic event by receiving live oak donations to be used in restoration of the last surviving wooden whaling ship Charles W. Morgan [built in 1841].
It truly is One Life For Another.

The festival is scheduled for the second weekend in August:
Saturday, August 14th, 10 am to 6 pm
Sunday, August 15th, 10 am to 5 pm

If you've never been, Mystic Seaport is an incredible destination for the entire family.

Shakespeare in the Park :: Richard III

Last Sunday, my friends and I spent a dreamy evening in Central Park, watching and drawing Shakespeare's "Richard III" staging by the magnificent New York Classical Theater.

It's a free event with intimate feel to it, in the midst of luscious greenery of the park, with great acting and beautiful costumes...The crowd follows the actors from spot to spot inside the park, as the sun sets. The closing scene happens against a deep navy sky and flickering of fireflies.

It's just one of those New York secrets one must discover. In July, don't miss New York Classical's staging of "Much Ado About Nothing" in Battery Park.
